ROCKVILLE, Md. — Montgomery County executive candidate Esther Wells has unveiled perhaps the most terrifying political advertisement ever produced for anyone who has submitted an expense report marked “miscellaneous.”

The Republican nominee, a CPA with a master’s degree in taxation, is leaning into her résumé with a campaign poster styled like an action thriller:

VOTE FOR THE ACCOUNTANT.

Because apparently Montgomery County politics has finally reached the stage where Liam Neeson is unavailable, Batman is too expensive, and the only person left to save the budget carries a calculator.

The poster features Wells standing in the rain clutching a briefcase beneath the warning:

CALCULATE YOUR MOVES.

County bureaucrats reportedly responded by slowly deleting Excel files.

“Dear God,” whispered one imaginary administrator. “She knows about formulas.”

Wells says she wants to audit the county’s roughly $8 billion budget, identify waste and mismanagement, implement zero-based budgeting and establish measurable performance goals.

Which is horrifying news for every government program whose current performance metric is apparently “We spent all the money, so technically we completed the mission.”

Her opponent, Democrat Will Jawando, has not announced whether he will answer with his own cinematic poster, although The Canton Cat has obtained several rejected concepts:

The campaign’s plumbing analogy may be even worse for county government.

“You wouldn’t hire a plumber to do electrical work,” Wells wrote.

Correct.

You would hire Montgomery County, commission a 14-month study on whether electricity disproportionately impacts marginalized plumbing infrastructure, create an Electrical Plumbing Equity Task Force, hire six consultants, install a bike lane around the fuse box and raise property taxes because the toilet still won’t flush.

Then everyone gets a commemorative tote bag.

The Canton Cat attempted to inspect the county budget personally but was removed from the building after asking why “community engagement consultant” appeared 47 times and whether Fancy Feast could qualify as an infrastructure grant.

I remain unconvinced.

But I did steal a calculator.

And somewhere tonight, deep inside Montgomery County government, an Excel spreadsheet just heard a noise downstairs.

She’s coming.
