GAITHERSBURG — Delegate Joe Vogel spent the weekend promising Marylanders they will re-elect Wes Moore, flip the state even bluer, and keep the same team that made rent feel like a second mortgage. Then he went home. To his mother’s house. Where the utilities are someone else’s problem.
A GOP delegate recently pointed out the obvious: it is easier to vote for higher costs when you still have a childhood bedroom and a fridge that restocks itself. Vogel, 29, Harvard-polished, Annapolis-progressive, and professionally concerned about “working families,” has spent years explaining housing, taxes, and affordability from the one ZIP code where dinner is still included.

This is the Maryland model. The General Assembly raises the price of living. The governor gives a speech about dignity. A young socialist-adjacent delegate poses under a “Fighting For Us” banner and then returns to a household that already fought the mortgage in the 1990s.

Vogel does not own a home. He said so himself years ago and treated it like a moral credential. In Montgomery County, that is less a statement of solidarity than a weather report. Most people his age cannot buy either. The difference is they do not get to pass the bills that keep it that way and then call it justice.
The rally photos are doing the work. Smile with April McClain Delaney. Tag Cheryl Kagan. Promise Wes Moore another term. Talk about flipping seats from red to blue as if the color of the map pays the electric bill. Meanwhile, the people who actually write checks for rent in Rockville and Gaithersburg are wondering why the guy lecturing them about costs still has a curfew in spirit.

Maryland’s affordability crisis did not sneak in through a basement window. It was voted in, session after session, by people who will never see a late fee on their own name. Vogel’s contribution is to look shocked that groceries went up while living in the last functioning rent-control unit in America: Mom.

If he wants to fight for families, he should start with one that does not still have his report cards on the fridge. Until then, Marylanders can keep the slogan.
Fighting for us. Sleeping at hers.
