ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland Gov. Wes Moore appeared on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday and once again deployed the most powerful tool in his political arsenal:

That smile.

Not a normal smile.

The “I just said something extremely polished and would appreciate it if nobody opened another browser tab” smile.

Moore reportedly discussed his military service, his leadership of the National Governors Association, and Maryland’s approach to artificial intelligence while maintaining the facial expression of a man who had just been informed the camera was still rolling.

Critics quickly challenged several of his claims.

Which meant Maryland entered another familiar phase of the Wes Moore news cycle:

Statement → applause → screenshot → fact-check → clarification → bigger smile.

On the National Governors Association, Moore is indeed chair for 2026–27, but the organization’s leadership formally alternates between parties. Moore was elected chair after serving as vice chair/chair-elect under Republican Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt.

This apparently did not prevent television from treating the development like Moore had personally crossed the Potomac carrying bipartisanship on his shoulders.

The Canton Cat has obtained the governor’s alleged pre-interview checklist:

☑ Say Maryland is leading

Moore also entered the increasingly frantic national debate over artificial intelligence, where tech leaders are themselves divided over how aggressively governments should regulate development. Recent calls from major AI executives for stronger safety measures have run directly into arguments that regulation could slow innovation or entrench dominant companies.

Asked to explain precisely where Maryland fits into all this, Moore allegedly smiled hard enough to temporarily illuminate Prince George’s County.

“Maryland is going to lead,” he reportedly said.

Lead where?

Forward.

Doing what?

Leading.

How?

Boldly.

Thank you, Governor.

Marylanders watching from home were left with the recurring question:

Why does this man keep appearing on national television like Maryland is a beta test for a presidential campaign?

One Annapolis resident attempted to change the channel but discovered Moore was already appearing on the next one.

Another opened his refrigerator and found the governor inside explaining public service beside the mustard.

Even Maryland’s stray cats are becoming concerned.

“We used to get five minutes of peace between political interviews,” said one Canton Cat correspondent while licking gravy off a discarded Wawa lid. “Now every time somebody plugs in a studio light, Wes Moore appears and starts talking about service.”

CNN staff reportedly remain unable to explain the phenomenon.

Producers simply turn on the cameras.

A faint inspirational soundtrack begins.

And somewhere in Maryland, the smile activates.

At press time, Moore was reportedly preparing for another television interview titled:

“Governor Wes Moore Explains Why Governor Wes Moore Is Doing an Excellent Job Explaining Governor Wes Moore.”

It has already been renewed for three seasons.
