BALTIMORE — Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson stunned residents this week by casually revealing that he is, in fact, a swimmer, instantly transforming a perfectly nice story about a Baltimore lifeguard into an unexpected episode of Bill Ferguson: Fun Facts About Bill Ferguson.
“As a swimmer myself,” Ferguson began, because apparently no public policy announcement is complete until we learn which recreational activity an elected official also enjoys.
The Canton Cat stared at the post.
“Wow. He can swim. Get Michael Phelps on the phone.”
Ferguson praised Baltimore’s renovated pools, swim programs, and young people teaching the next generation.
All good stuff.
But the real bombshell was clear:
BILL FERGUSON HAS BEEN IN WATER BEFORE.
Sources say Annapolis was immediately thrown into chaos as aides rushed to update his official biography.
Senate President.
Lawyer.
Husband.
Father.
Apparently buoyant.

Political observers are now demanding answers.
Freestyle?
Backstroke?
Dog paddle?
Or does he just stand in the shallow end talking about capital budgets?

The Canton Cat is skeptical.
“I’ve fallen into the harbor twice,” he said. “You don’t see me opening every transportation bill with ‘As a maritime mammal myself.’”
State lawmakers are reportedly preparing legislation recognizing Ferguson’s historic aquatic achievement, including a ceremonial lane marker at Patterson Park and a blue ribbon reading:
HE DID NOT SINK.

At press time, Ferguson was expected to announce that, as someone who has personally eaten lunch, he strongly supports school nutrition programs.
