WASHINGTON — American political discourse reached another exciting milestone this week when Laura Loomer demanded that journalist Mehdi Hasan be stripped of his citizenship and deported over a resurfaced social-media post.

Because apparently, we have now progressed from “I disagree with your tweet” to “please revoke this man’s citizenship.”

The controversy centers on a February 2025 post in which Hasan quote-posted news of a Georgia plane crash with the phrase:

“Make American Planes Crash Again.”

Not exactly Hallmark material.

Loomer resurfaced the post and tagged Secretary of State Marco Rubio, asking when Hasan would be “denaturalized” and calling him an “Islamic invader.” She argued the post amounted to wishing violence on Americans and said he should be deported.

The Canton Cat consulted our immigration attorney, who is actually a raccoon living behind the courthouse.

His legal opinion:

“That is not how any of this works.”

Citizenship generally does not disappear because somebody posts something offensive, grotesque or spectacularly stupid. Denaturalization is a legal process tied to circumstances such as citizenship obtained illegally or through material misrepresentation — not a government unsubscribe button for terrible tweets.

This apparently came as devastating news to the internet.

Hasan responded by asking why mainstream news organizations devote extensive attention to streamer Hasan Piker while allegedly ignoring worse rhetoric from someone he described as a presidential adviser.

Then everybody else joined the fight.

Within hours, the conversation had expanded to racism, MAGA, Islam, Hasan Piker, Donald Trump, media hypocrisy, and whether Loomer herself had crossed various lines in her own posts.

At which point The Canton Cat stopped taking notes and crawled back into the dumpster.

But the funniest part is how quickly modern American politics has eliminated every intermediate level of disagreement.

The old system:

Bad tweet → criticism → argument → everyone goes home angry.

The new system:

Bad tweet → DENATURALIZE HIM → DEPORT HIM → TAG CABINET SECRETARY → 47 quote-tweets about fascism → nobody remembers what started the argument.

To be clear, Hasan’s plane-crash post can be condemned without inventing a magical constitutional eject button.

Likewise, Loomer can demand whatever she wants.

I demand Baltimore install heated dumpsters every winter.

The government has stubbornly refused to recognize this as binding federal policy.

For now, Hasan remains an American citizen, Loomer remains furious on the internet, and X remains the only place where a six-word post can somehow produce an emergency symposium on immigration law before breakfast.

America survives another day.
